Raise funds, SAVE LIVES! King’s Grant Baptist is committed to supporting Crisis Pregnancy Center of Tidewater’s 2024 Walk for LIFE. Our church’s goal is to have 6 Fundraising Walkers – will you help? Pick up a fundraising form on Wednesday night or Sunday and register to raise funds or make a donation CLICK HERE.

We are also partnering with the Bridge Network of Churches in support of their baby car seat project, for the Crisis Pregnancy Center. State law requires NEW car seats, (used ones are not allowed). If you would like to participate, purchase a car seat in a neutral color, suitable for a boy or a girl. Drop it off at the church by Sunday April 14, and we will get the new car seat to the Bridge Network office for you. This will benefit new moms and their babies at our local Crisis Pregnancy Center.

Green Eggs and Ham – a Parable

Your pastor of discipleship had an epiphany in the middle of the night not all too long ago… making change in the church can often be like reading one of my favorite books as a child, Green Eggs and Ham. Let’s look at the two characters in this story.

Sam-I-Am is a pushy little pastor who embodies the spirit of global evangelism, relational discipleship, and life transformation by encouraging his people to always ask the question, “How can we make this church better than it already is?” and reach more people with the gospel. The summer of 2022 may appear to be an endless barrage of “time for change” and “something new is about to happen” language that the average church member may feel like the other character in the story. In Dr. Seuss’ story, Sam-I-Am is essentially breaking down the other character’s will to resist green eggs and ham by pestering him endlessly. I trust that “pestering” is not your actual feeling, but your discipleship leadership team is hoping that the congregation will see the ultimate benefit of this new schedule, which puts the church in a position of growth and simplicity. Sam-I-Am’s marketing scheme is simplicity itself: he keeps asking the other fellow whether he would like to try his strange, unappealingly colored product in a number of various and increasingly preposterous scenarios: here or there, in a box or with a fox, in a house or even with a mouse. How many of our people in your classroom have simply discounted the time change all together, even before we have done one day of the new schedule? They’re saying, “I do not like green eggs and ham, Sam-I-Am, you leave me be.” I seem to remember a line from my past, regarding the seven last words of a dying church — “We’ve never done it that way before.”

The other character in the story is twice as tall as Sam-I-Am but otherwise remarkably similar in appearance. His first words are that he doesn’t like Sam-I-Am, which seems to indicate that he has been the target of the little marketing genius’ advertising strategy before. It appears that from the start, Sam-I-Am is the enemy to be avoided, like he’s saying, “I’m not buying what this guy’s selling.” Pastors are like that. We come up with all sorts of ideas to reach people with the gospel and make church a better experience for outsiders, always asking the question, “What can be done to make church better” and “to reach more people?” The larger character starts out with a cold resistance to Sam’s non-stop sales pitch, but ultimately makes the worst mistake any consumer can ever make: agreeing to try the product as a means of getting the sales guy to finally stop. After tasting the unpleasantly colored ham and eggs, he discovers it tastes delicious and becomes a devoted and, likely, a lifelong raving fan of future ideas by Sam-I-Am.

I hope that months and years down the road, we can look back at the summer of 2022 and come to the conclusion that all the turmoil surrounding time changes, class schedules, worship style, and church leadership, perhaps seeing that none of these brought down the church like we feared it would. Perhaps the changes made this summer will actually benefit the vast majority of the congregation. We feel this schedule fixes the problems discovered with the 2021 schedule. We are positioning ourselves for growth. We will become proactive rather than reactive when it comes to people showing up because they sense God is at work here. We have to ask ourselves the hard question, “Will God show up here if we don’t follow his leadership?” Are we not really saying, “We just want to go back to Egypt no matter what may be waiting for us in the Promised Land.” So, here is the parable, “Try green eggs and ham, maybe just try them. You may just like them, we will see.” My friends, maybe, just maybe, this new schedule will work out very well, so the question that each of us must ask ourselves, “Why am I so unwilling to give it a go?”

I hope that Sam-I-Am, the pastor who is trying to help the congregation experience something new (to see if this schedule really does work better), that perhaps he will have earned your trust, acknowledging that he had your back all along, just encouraging all of us to grow in faith, follow Jesus closer, look at the needs of others more than ourselves, to reach people who have not yet walked through our doors, for us all to serve enthusiastically in ministry, and to intentionally welcome people with the love of Jesus as they enter this place. Even Jerry said, “The best is yet to be.” He did not say, “This is the best it will ever be.”

Our Student Ministry Intern

Natalie Cox – Student Ministry Intern

Hello, my name is Natalie Cox and I am so excited to be working as a Youth Ministry intern for the church this summer under Beth Anderson! I am a freshman student at Regent University who is working towards a bachelor’s degree in Christian Ministry with the hope of pursuing ministry full-time, likely in the sphere of non-profit women’s ministry. I attended the King’s Grant youth group for five years before graduating high school, and I look forward to becoming a part of and learning the process behind such an integral part of my own salvation experience. Throughout this summer, I would like to create more intimate relationships with our congregation and particularly the students here as we return back to our on-campus events with the youth ministry. Thank you to everyone who has been so welcoming and accommodating thus far; I am so thrilled to get to know everyone I have not had a chance to work closely with prior to this opportunity.

COVID Update Nov 2020

COVID UPDATE:

What is continuing? King’s Grant Baptist Church will continue to worship. Sunday morning worship service schedules remain the same. Childcare for preschool and children remain the same. Small group Bible Studies continue to meet onsite and online.

What is not happening? Due to the rise in health concerns, all (on site) small group fellowships (such as Christmas parties) are discontinued for this year. This includes any onsite fellowships for Sunday classes, Parking Lot Parables and aged ministries (student and children) during the week. This will support increased measures of safety onsite for our ministry programs.

An Opportunity for fellowship: All usual Christmas fellowships will be consolidated into a church wide fellowship: Campfire Christmas (an outdoor venue planned for Friday, December 11). This will offer an engaging time of Celebration for all ages as we gather for meaningful community and worship.  All Covid-19 Requirements will be met for houses of worship.

Cheerfully in Christ,
Your KGBC Ministry Team

Still Happening

With all of the things that have changed over the past few weeks, it is so important to be reminded of the things that are STILL HAPPENING…

  1. Worship is still happening – it is finally coming together. Continue to pray that the message of Easter will continue to shine brightly.
    1. If this is your first time with us, let’s connect. Let us know you are leaning in at King’s Grant. We won’t add you to a mailing list, we just want to connect.
    2. Our Connect Card is still happening – click here and let us know you’re with us, or if you have a need or prayer request.
    3. Our worship bulletin is still happening – click here to prepare for and see what’s happening this Sunday and how to prepare for online worship.
  2. Small groups are still happening…
    1. The Men’s group is still happening on Wednesdays, except NOT at Denny’s, we’re online.
    2. The Tuesday Ladies’ Bible Class is still happening on Tuesday mornings and Tuesday evenings, online together.
    3. The Student Ministry is still happening with Sunday morning Bible study and Wednesday evening youth group.
    4. Sunday School is still happening – many classes are meeting online using the Zoom platform.
    5. Wednesday Night Life Group is still happening … while we are not having Midweek Cafe, we can still get together for Life Group. Here are some questions to consider.
  3. Church attendance is still happening – when we meet online, we can see the name of the people we love gathering together for worship. We are excited to hear about groups getting together; remember that numbers represent people!
  4. Giving is still happening – so many of you are continuing to invest in the mission of King’s Grant by sending your tithe check to the church even though we don’t have the chance to pass an offering plate! Others have found out how to give online using our giving app and the church website.
  5. Family ministry is still happening – while we can’t meet with your kids and have Sunday School, our director of children’s and preschool ministries is providing parents with tools to raise their kids in the knowledge of the Lord. Check out the Family Ministry Facebook Page.
  6. Service to others is still happening – our people have stepped up to volunteer to meet the needs of our community, which is a little more difficult in the time of social distancing, but our passion to serve is still strong. We are challenging our people to make an impact in their circle of influence, primarily among their neighbors.
  7. Prayer is still happening – we are a praying people, the prayer requests are still going out, your staff still prays for you all, and we have many prayer warriors ready to pray with you when the need is made known.
  8. God’s Word is still happening – through technology and dedication to the Great Commission, God’s Word is being shared on the internet, through social media, and we are blessed every morning by devotions written by our lead pastor. Text the word KGBC to 22828 to get on the Weekly E-mail list – King’s Grant At-a-Glance.
  9. Our meeting together is still happening – just because we cannot meet in our wonderful building, we are not defined by that building, or even by the way we worship. The point is, we still meet together for corporate worship, except we have to do this more creatively. It’s easy to just show up at church at the right time, but it takes a little effort top figure out how to navigate all this technology to continue doing the things we love and know if so important in our spiritual lives.
  10. Decisions for Jesus are still happening…
    1. If you want to know more about following Jesus or becoming a Christian, let’s connect.
    2. If you want to join the church, you don’t have to wait until we meet on campus, let’s connect.
    3. If you need someone to pray with you, for whatever reason, let’s connect.

May God bless our efforts to spread the gospel, meet as the body of Christ, and responsibly serve others in Jesus’ name.

Live Stream Troubleshooting

During this season of live-streaming our Sunday morning worship, some people may discover issues with the sound or video, so, this is our troubleshooting page.

Try these solutions, then if you still have trouble, text the word HELPDESK to 62488 and you’ll receive a phone call from one of our technology helpers.

SOUND ISSUES:

  • Sometimes the answer is right in front of us but we did not see it… somewhere of the video screen, look for a microphone icon that let’s you “unmute” the video.
  • Make sure your computer or device sound is unmuted, and volume is up.
  • If using headphones, are they in working order? Plugged in?
  • If you hear some other conversation that does not appear to be your staff (like on an open mic), check to make sure the KGBC Live Stream is the only browser window open.
  • If needed, perhaps close your browser and then open a new one, then type this address into your new browser – kgbc.us/live.

VIDEO ISSUES:

  • Is the video choppy? Perhaps other devices in your home are taking up bandwidth (but with today’s high speed internet, this might be unlikely).
  • Is the video “frozen?” Move your cursor over the video and find the pause/play button. A video restart may be needed (pause then play) and the video should jump to the latest point in time.
  • Video is still “frozen?” Try refreshing your browser page.
  • If needed, perhaps close your browser and then open a new one, then type this address into your new browser – kgbc.us/live.

IF A SOLUTION IS NOT FOUND HERE:

  • If none of this works, or you discovered a problem not listed here, please write your problem in the comments box below.
  • If you discover a solution not mentioned here, please write in the comment box what you did to solve the issue.
